Crunchyroll President & COO Discuss Future Of Anime In The Age Of TikTok & Short-Form Content

In a recent interview with Nikkei Xtrend, Crunchyroll president Rahul Purini and COO Gita Rebbapragada shared their insights on how anime may have to adapt in the future to meet the changing demands of younger audiences.

In a time where content creation and short-form video content are on the rise especially among younger generation, Rebbapragada pointed to platforms like TikTok as clear indicators of where future trends might be heading.

While she noted that this trend may not significantly impact anime immediately, the industry will need to consider how to engage with a generation increasingly accustomed to content creation.

TikTok is a clear example, but the younger generation spends a lot of time creating their own content, and platforms are providing tools for that. While this may not happen immediately, we will need to think about how to engage with a generation that creates its own content.

Purini echoed these sentiments, pointing out how the format of anime itself may need to adapt, emphasizing on the shifting attention span of the youth.

Most anime episodes are 21 to 24 minutes long. Meanwhile, the younger generation is used to watching short videos, around 2 to 4 minutes, jumping from one to another (like on TikTok). We will need to consider different ways to tell anime stories. The ecosystem of anime itself will need to continue evolving.

When asked about the rising popularity of anime, Purini highlighted how Netlix’s One Piece Live-Action series has served as a gateway for many new fans to watch the anime on the platform.

He also noted that Crunchyroll’s paid subscriber count surpassed 15 million in August, up from approximately 11 million a year prior.

The conversation also highlighted the global surge in anime’s popularity. Purini referenced a recent survey conducted by a US company that revealed 42% of Gen Z in the United States watches anime every week.

Notable public figures, including NFL player Jamal Williams and rapper Logic, have expressed their enthusiasm for anime, signifying its rise into mainstream culture. Purini stated, “It’s no longer just a phenomenon in Japan and some Southeast Asian countries.

According to Purini, the number of anime fans worldwide is expected to reach one billion within a few years.
