Sorachi serialized the original Gintama manga in Weekly Shounen Jump from December 2003 to September 2018. The last few chapters were released on the official Gintama app from May to June 2019.

Viz Media licensed the manga in English in 2006 and released the first 23 volumes from July 2007 to August 2011.

The first television anime produced by Sunrise aired 201 episodes from Spring 2006 to Winter 2010, followed by six seasons between 2011 and 2018, several original video anime, original net anime, and movies. The final installation in the franchise, Gintama: The Final (Gintama: The Very Final) movie, opened in Japanese theaters in January 2021.
